The Apple App Store is the most vibrant community for apps in the world. Lots of developers write apps for the iOS. New developers ocassionally give out free 'promo codes' to the general public , which can then be redeemed from the App Store. This generally gives the public a chance to play the app and provide an honest review.
Normally there are few channels that you can obtain a promo code.
I got these apps from the twitter channel of the developers and also various tech magazines.
The codes are only a one-use code. So normally they would post the code out for the public and those early birds will get the codes. For a few months of trying to be fast, I got myself some of the codes.
